Centre for Global Understanding, Tolerance and PluralismThe centre will strive to create academic, intellectual and cultural links between India and its neighbouring countries in South Asia as also act as a bridge between cultures and continents. Among the different areas of focus is to build bridges between the cultures and nations of Central and South America, Africa and Asia. Deepening critical understanding of European and western cultures as also non-western cultures is one of the aims of the centre.
In recent times there has been mistrust about Islam among different cultures. The centre will strive to overcome such mistrust and foster greater and deeper understanding between all religions. Dialogues between scholars and practitioners of faiths such as Hinduism, Islam, Christianity and Buddhism form a major plank of the centre's work.
An undergraduate level course which sensitizes students and youth to plurality, conflicts and global understanding is being developed by the centre.
Centre for World LanguagesThis centre will organize courses to learn different languages of India and the world. Initially the focus is on teaching of the six official languages of the United Nations, namely, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Chinese. Major Indian languages will also be taught at the centre. Languages such as Japanese, Korean and some European languages will also be offered at the centre gradually.
Centre for TranslationThis centre is set up for developing translators between languages. The first two programmes are developed for professional development of translators who translate from English to Bengali, and those from Bengali to English.
Centre for English Language SkillsEnglish has become a way of business and a tool for advancement of careers in India and in large parts of the world.
However, as more and more first and second generation learners enter the formal education sphere in India and in most developing nations, a large share of that population graduate from schools and colleges with poor reading, writing and speaking skills of English. This centre is focused to impart and enhance English language skills of students from India and different nations of Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas.
